By midnight, most people have either lost their friends, found new friends, or forgotten which category the people standing next to them belong in.
If your idea of romance involves shouting “WHAT?” repeatedly while somebody attempts to introduce themselves over the sound of several thousand intoxicated revellers, St Patrick’s in San Ġiljan may genuinely be your dream scenario.
For everyone else, it is at least entertaining to watch.
Yet reducing San Ġiljan to nightlife would be unfair.
There is another side to the town that many visitors never see.
Early mornings around Spinola Bay feel entirely different. The fishing boats remain. The waterfront cafés begin opening. Locals walk their dogs. Joggers pass by. The same place that hosted thousands of people the previous evening suddenly feels calm and surprisingly beautiful.
It’s often during those quieter moments that San Ġiljan becomes much easier to appreciate.
Dating here doesn’t have to revolve around clubs.
A walk around Spinola Bay remains one of Malta’s simplest and most reliable first-date locations. The scenery is attractive without trying too hard. There are countless cafés nearby. If the date is going well, there are restaurants, wine bars and waterfront spots within a few minutes’ walk.
And if the date is going badly?
At least the view is nice.
