Locals will often switch between the two names without even thinking about it, but regardless of what you call it, one thing remains true: almost everybody in Għawdex eventually ends up there.

Need to go shopping? Rabat.

Meeting friends? Rabat.

Need something from a government office? Rabat.

Fancy a coffee? Rabat.

Want to watch a film, wander around the market, grab a pastizz, or simply bump into half the people you know? Rabat again.

That matters more than people realise when it comes to dating.

Unlike some villages that feel sleepy outside festa season, Rabat has a constant flow of life running through it. It isn’t hectic in the way Valletta or Sliema can sometimes feel, but there is always something happening. People coming and going. Students finishing school. One of my favourite things about Rabat is that it still manages to retain some old Gozitan habits despite becoming increasingly modern. On a Sunday morning, you’ll still find people leaving church and heading straight for coffee and pastizzi. Entire families seem to emerge from nowhere and fill the cafés around the centre. Conversations stretch for hours. News travels faster than the internet. By lunchtime, half the island seems to know who was seen with whom.

For better or worse, that is still part of dating in Għawdex.

Privacy exists.

Just not as much as it does elsewhere.

The town has changed considerably over the years. The addition of newer shopping centres and retail developments has given locals more reasons to stay on the island rather than heading to Malta for every purchase. They’re hardly enormous by international standards, but for a small island they have become social hubs in their own right. People meet for coffee, browse shops they don’t need anything from, and occasionally pretend they weren’t hoping to run into somebody specific.

Dating often works like that.

The best encounters rarely happen when you’re actively looking for them.

Rabat also has something that many towns in Malta have quietly lost: walkability.

A first date here doesn’t need much planning. You can meet in the centre, wander through the narrow streets, stop for coffee, walk up towards the Citadel, admire the view over Għawdex, and somehow find that several hours have passed without either person checking their watch.

Good dates usually feel effortless.

Rabat makes effortless feel surprisingly easy.

Then there’s the cinema.

It’s not the largest cinema you’ll ever visit, and nobody is confusing it with Leicester Square, but there is something charming about having a local cinema on a small island. Cinema dates remain popular for a reason. They remove pressure. You don’t have to fill every second with conversation. Afterwards you already have something to talk about, even if the film was terrible.

Some of the best dates begin with a bad film and a good conversation afterwards.

Tourists often see the Citadel as Rabat’s main attraction, and understandably so. The views alone are worth the climb. Yet locals tend to know that the real attraction isn’t any particular landmark. It’s the atmosphere. The feeling that everybody is somehow connected to everybody else.

That can be frustrating if you’re trying to keep a new relationship quiet.

It can also be comforting.

People look out for each other in Għawdex.

They gossip about each other too, of course, but that’s another story.

Dating apps are widely used, but they often function differently here. In larger cities, apps can feel anonymous. In Gozo, there is a reasonable chance your match knows somebody you know. Or your cousin knows their cousin. Or your mother knows their aunt.

The island has a way of reminding people that six degrees of separation is far too many.

Yet despite all of that, Rabat never feels claustrophobic.

Perhaps because so many different people pass through it every day.

People from Nadur, Xagħra, Għajnsielem, Qala and every other corner of Għawdex.

Everyone eventually ends up in Rabat.

And because everyone ends up in Rabat, it becomes one of the easiest places on the island to meet somebody new.

Not because it is glamorous.

Not because it is trendy.

But because it feels real.

In an age where dating increasingly happens through screens, there is something refreshing about a town where people still spend so much time simply being around other people.

Perhaps that’s why so many relationships in Għawdex seem to start there.

Not with a grand romantic gesture.

Just with two people who happened to be in the same place at the same time.

Which, when you think about it, is how most good stories begin.
